Court Cards

Court Cards represent actual people that you interact with, or they can symbolize aspects of yourself and others. Many people find them a little bit tricky to interpret in spreads, but if you apply their individual characteristics to the question at hand, or identify who they might represent in your situation, they can be abundantly helpful.

Understanding Court Card energy is very simple if you keep in mind that each Character combines the energies of one or two elements – that of rank and of suit. If you consider how these elements interact with each other, you will have an excellent understanding of each card’s personality. Remember that Princesses represent earth, Princes represent air, Queens represent water, and Kings represent fire. In the Minor Arcana section, we saw that Wands are associated with fire, Cups with water, Swords with air, and Pentacles with earth. Each Court Card has an added element that sets them apart from other cards in the deck – power animals, or animal totems. These animals provide additional valuable insight into the nature of the personality on the card and can even be interchanged with the actual person. As animals tend to be less complicated than humans, sometimes looking at this association can give us a clearer image of the basic energies involved.
